A City Shaped by
Growth and Resilience

Welcome to Oxford, Alabama; a community with roots dating back to the early 1830s, when settlers established what was first known as “Lickskillet” in Benton County. Incorporated as Oxford in 1852, the town quickly grew with the arrival of the Alabama and Tennessee Rivers Railroad and became a key cotton and trading center before the Civil War. Though much of the town was destroyed in 1865, Oxford rebuilt and continued to prosper. Today, it stands as one of Calhoun County’s fastest-growing cities, uniquely positioned across county lines to offer access to the resources and opportunities of both Calhoun and Talladega counties.
